Training Camp

With one week of double sessions behind us the team is already in great shape.  The strong core of returning varsity players are picking up right where they left off last season, and our 6 new rookies are coming along great.  Everybody's working hard and progressing in their positions.  We have our first test on Tuesday when we go to Mascenic for a 6:00 scrimmage.  We'll finally get to play against a competitive offense and see how we're shaping up.  We still have a long way to go before opening day on the 29th, but we'll be ready.

Almost that time

Hey everybody, I hope you've all been having a great summer.  Volleyball starts up next Monday so I want to make sure you're all ready to go by then.  Thursday night, August 9th, from 6-7pm you'll have the opportunity to turn in all your paperwork which must include:

    - Blue Physical Form - FOR FRESHMEN AND NEW SHS ATHLETES ONLY
    - Yellow waiver and release form
    - Signed last page of athletic handbook
    - $55 user fee

If you do not have ALL these forms into the athletic office then you WILL NOT be eligible to practice on Monday.  From 7-8pm we will have our Meet The Coaches meeting.  Please have at least one of your parents attend the meeting because we have some important information to communicate with them.

Practices for the first two weeks starting Monday the 13th will be double sessions from 11am-1pm and 5-7pm.  Tuesday, August 21st, we will have a 6:00 scrimmage at Mascenic.  Our first game is against the new Coe-Brown team on Wednesday, August 29th.  Please continue to check out the website for all the latest details and information throughout the season.

Summer opportunities

I'm sure you all have great plans for the summer, but I would like to encourage you to add these open gym dates to your plans.  There'll be co-ed open gyms for volleyball on July 6, 13, and 26 from 6-9pm at the SHS gym.  The more playing time you get over the summer will only be better for you when the fall season rolls around.  So I hope you can make it out to some of these nights.

There is also a new beach vball court at Baboosic Lake which is open to adults and high school students on Tuesday and Tursday nights at 6:00 from June 23rd to August 18th.  So get a group of guys and get out and play!

Hope you have a great summer, and we'll see you on August 13th!

ps. Don't forget, recruit, recruit, RECRUIT!

Professional USA Volleyball League?

The United States Volleyball League (USVBL) is trying to get a national pro league together for men's indoor volleyball.  This is an exciting opportunity for the promotion and popularity of volleyball in the US.  There are already leagues like this in Europe and Asia which means American players have to leave the States to play at this level.  This would also help promote boys volleyball at the high school level and provide opportunity to continue playing at higher levels.  Check out the article here.

Quarterfinals

The Souhegan Boys Volleyball Team (6-9) played in their Quarterfinal game tonight against the Astros (11-6) of Pinkerton Academy.  The boys went out and played hard but Pinkerton's scrappy play and hard hitters were too much to overcome.  The Sabers fell in three games 25-16, 25-14, 25-17.  The big hitters for Souhegan were Zack Laforet, who racked up 5 kills on 10 attempts and 2 blocks, Brian Hynes with 2 kills on 7 attempts and 2 aces, and Sven Benson with 2 kills on 10 attempts.  This ends the season for the Sabers, but with a strong returning junior class they have high hopes for next season.

Playoff time

All the games have been played and the standings are in.  We ended the season with a 6-8 record (our home Keene game was a forfeit win) which is good for 5th place.  Pinkerton and Keene tie with a 9-5 record but Keene wins the tie breaker because they beat Londonderry, a higher seeded team.  So Thursday we'll be playing our quarterfinal game at 6:00pm at Pinkerton Academy.  Hope you can come over and cheer us on!
